Natrialba magadii ATCC 43099
A hyperextremotolerant hyperextremophile that thrives optimally in hypersaline, alkaline conditions (OGpH=9.5, NaCl OGM=3.5). Additionally, N. magadii has been shown to survive simulated environments modeled on conditions hypothesized to exist on the Jovian moon Europa for up to three hours: N. magadii showed remarkable resistance to high vacuum (10-5 Pa), surviving in numbers greater than fellow archaeon Halofax volcanii or the famously extremotolerant bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans, and survived ionizing radiation up to 150 J m-2 as well as the other two species, though for fluencies higher than 150 J m-2, H. volcanii did not survive, and less than 0.1% of N. magadii survived, while 1% of D. radiodurans survived.
