Superfamily Hominioidea
Introduction
The family Hominoidea is the scientific category for what are commonly called “the apes”. It includes both the great apes (humans, chimpanzees, gorillas, orang-utans; family hominidae) and the lesser apes (gibbons and siamangs; family hylobatidae).
History of the Hominoidea
The family Hominoidea was named by John Edward Gray in 1825. It was originally intended to distinguish the humans and great apes (family hominoidea) from the lesser apes (family hylobatoidea).
