The family Hominidae is the scientific category for what are commonly called “the great apes”: humans, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orang-utans.
History of the Hominidae
The family Hominidae was named by John Edward Gray in 1825. It was originally intended to distinguish humans the great apes (family pongidae)
